Description

The ending got me emotional

The longest manga I’ve ever finished (i think)! It was really good! I’m not very good at writing proper reviews, so I’ll leave it to the others before and after me. I just wanted to express my appreciation and love for this manga. Relatively low rating, considering what I’ve said so far, because I skipped a lot of arcs. I don’t feel like I missed anything that important, thought!

One of the best battle shonen of the 2010s

Saike Matashitemo is Tsubasa Fukuchi's masterpiece. From the side characters with with small parts all the way to the main characters everyone have interesting development and amazing interactions, it's an evolution from Law of Ueki which had more of a one piece/gash bell style of character dynamic; Saike Matashitemo is akin to something like Hoshi no Samidare or even Fullmetal Alchemist's type of character development.
Tsubasa Fukuchi might be the third best mangaka in of "fights with cool powers" (only behind Araki and Togashi), the fights are smart, inventive and often have a comedic edge to them.

It's reassuring to see such a heartwarming series have more depth and emotional weight with each new arc not at the expense of being sincere, as it has happened to other series that falls on the trappings of equating more depth to become more cynical and dark.

Takes many cliches and puts a unique twist too them

I'm really enjoying this manga so far. It takes a lot of cliches and puts a fun twist to them.

The main character is a selfless person who literally kills himself for others, but unlike most series with this concept, this really does comes back to bite him in the butt in a serious way. He becomes obsessed with saving people and it has some realistic and terrible consequences. That being said, his reason to persevere through all of what he's dealing with is also logical and believable to his character, and isn't just "oh I love my friends so much imma die here and now for them".

This manga also takes the "friendship is power" cliche and actually make it works in the series. It's not annoying and is integrated pretty well into the series. Based on previous manga, this concept is hard to pull off, so I am happy to see it pulled off here.

The main character develops quite well and so does the side guy. The main girl who comes in the later chapters is lacking though, but she's alright I guess.

The series really lacks in its villains, though. I honestly skipped a few chapters which were spent fighting a dumb villain. Also, the series doesn't really build on its villains, as most of them are relevant for for at most five chapters. When they do stay relevant throughout the entire series because a few ally with the MC, it's very forced and the change takes place with the main character having The Magical Persuading Phrase™️.

If you want a fun drama read that takes a bit of a dark turn in the later chapters, you should try this.

THE FIRST FEW CHAPTERS WITH THE BEST FRIEND IS NOT THE ENTIRE PLOT OF THE SERIES. IT REALLY DOES GROW FROM WHERE IT STARTS OFF. DON'T DROP IT EARLY ON FOR THIS REASON.

Hidden Gem Drama Battle Shounen

I read up to 9 volumes of Saike, loved it and now would wish to share my thoughts on it.

Saike Matashitemo does really well to connect us to the main character, appropriately named Saike. The first arc is really drama focused and shows Saike's emotions and growth as he deals with the pain of his childhood friend dying over and over and trying desperately with determination to save her. We get to know a lot about Saike, which gets us in his shoes and enhances the experience once the series becomes a battle shounen.

Yes, the series does become a battle shounen. I know it might feel non-indicative for the first arc to be about drama then have special power fights all of a sudden after that, however, this is the kind of series with some of everything in it. It's an action but it's far from being just action, there's some great humor and heart wrenching drama, which stays as an important part of the series even after the initial arc.

The fights in the series are very detail oriented and it's really interesting to see Saike analyze what went wrong in each of his loops in order to come up with some clever solution to defeat an opponent. Not only Saike but some of his allies sometimes have to deal with their own tactical battles, unable to rely on Saike's ability. Also, watching Saike proceed with determination, no matter the dangerous odds and how many loops it takes can be quite irable.

The powers for each character are creative as well the strategies. Though not as advanced as Jojo(what is advanced as Jojo anyway?), it's one of those rare series where it's actually fun to think along with the characters in the fights about how they'll win and be impressed at whatever trick they use. Throughout all those fights in the 9 volumes, I think there's only been a two or so plot holes. However, it should only be a small problem in the midst of so many more engaging fights.

Throughout the series, even following the first arc, we learn a lot about Saike and there are a lot to love him for and relate to him about. Whether it be how he starts off apathetic and finds his purpose in life which he really dedicates himself to, how he can be a show off after adopting the hero role, his care for his friends, even the little things he happens to like. Though he's not exactly a normie like a lot of anime heroes seem to be nowadays, which may be an issue for a lot of normal people readers. Anyways, the way this story bonds us to Saike makes it all the more anxious when he must face his impending doom later. Speaking of which, the series does well to make clear the consequences when making dangerous choices.

Moving on, even though Saike doesn't have a huge roster of characters like most shounen, I'd say the ones there are are interesting and enjoyable enough, many of their antics will also make you laugh, especially Saike's allies. They have their own issues to deal with and develop as they befriend Saike, have some fun interactions as they mess around and grow in relationships.

From their deep bonds with Saike, it's touching to see how they're affected by his fate. Their different personalities also makes it interesting to see how they deal with different situations. There are a few moments when you'll find some of their actions to be quite irrational, however these are times when they're over emotional. It's natural as they're quite human.

The art style is cute and simple, so it might not be for you if you're into those super realistic looking manga with a lot of texture. I think the art works for the series however, Saike's cute design makes him all the more lovable for example. We also get some characters, usually villains, designed to be effectively intimidating too, just in general, the cast has a very creative variation in designs. My only personal problem with the art is that there are occasionally times when there aren't backgrounds, maybe that makes it too simple.

The pacing feels fine, we get enough time for the characters to interact and develop, the story to progress and none of the fights are too long. The way this manga sets up the atmosphere is decent and helps the drama. There are some creatively beautiful visuals used here and there.

If there is one big problem with the series however, I think many more characters should be recurring. It's mainly Saike's few friends who stick by him throughout the series. Most other characters fade out of the story after their arc is over, many of whom I believe have a lot of potential. There are a few surprise returns but those are a rare occasion. Hopefully, this area will be better later on.

So that's what I have to say about Saike. I think it's a great manga and my favorite new one that came out these last few years but following it feels lonely as I have little to nobody to ever talk to about it. It feels as though I'm off in a world completely separate from this one in a way. It's probably doing better in japan however, as it's still ongoing with at least 10 volumes in the making. But I do believe it deserves more love anyways. I think most people should be able to enjoy Saike as it's not only for action fans or drama fans, but if there are a kind of reader I'd recommend Saike to the most, I'd say ones who want a bit of everything would love it. Action, drama, comedy, supernatural, even nightmare fuel at some points. So that's it, I hope you'll enjoy this series as I do.

Fun but braindead

The author pays no attention to the fact that suspension of disbelief only lasts so long on series that takes themselves seriously. The MC is a exceptionally dumb kid that has no idea how to make use of it's power and neither has a speck of common sense even when given infinite chances at getting some. Furthermore, the trigger to activate his deux ex machina power is just as stupid and is without a proper justification for why it does have a special requirement when it's met no matter what ridiculous situation the kid may end up in. This series would be so much easier to digest if the author actually gave a damn about the situations he puts his characters in and how they handle them, but no, you have to not think about anything and just be amused at how Saike dodges stuff he was slapped/crushed/slashed/punched by last time -and didn't die-.
WAS IT TOO HARD TO HAVE THE RESET TRIGGER ON DEATH INSTEAD OF THE POND!??!

Regrets that symbolized from Saike's power.

I really like it. For some people it might be boring at the beginning, but eventually it becomes interesting, touching even. The power to turn back time symbolizes regrets; something that we actually can do before but we didn't for whatever reason. And sometimes, to fix something, we need hardwork. Saike's way of doing it might be reckless, but it's the only way he knows. I really want to know how this story will end. It's still ongoing, so I'm sure there are still plots yet revealed by Fukuchi-sensei.

As u/Morphin007 explains below, the beginning of this series makes no sense.

(The main character attempts a few idiotic rescues before condemning himself to death. A rock through the windshield to wake the truck driver, a log on the road, or simply holding his friend in place could all have done the job.)

Some generous readers are willing to overlook an awful start. An awful follow-up is a separate matter.

The fights our would-be hero encounter somehow let him crawl back to this random pond and reset his day. Get hit with a concrete telephone pole? No worries, that pole-wielding asshole will walk away so our mutilated MC can hobble off to drown himself. Did an invisible, armed man dodge your attack? No worries, I'm sure that murderous, psychotic creep will also let you go.

With so little thought in the MC's power, this series should have been axed in development.

I seriously can't go further than the beginning... it's just plain stupid...
The guy relive the same journey ok, he love to take note during class but he need to hear some random conversation during the lunch and end of class to understand it's the same day ? Having the same classes, it's the same day, there is many things that should scream to him that's the same day before lunch (like the class schedule, the date on the board, what he learn during class)...

And after that he try to save his friend but instead of trying to do a simple thing like take her hand to avoid her being on the road at the right hour, he just try many possible way to avoid interacting with her even if each times that doesn't change a thing... And it's not like he tried once or twice, he tried at least a dozen times or more and it never occured to him he could just stop her to go on that road or tracking back the driver to stop him...
So after that he just decide to push her and sacrifice himself... So yeah he can push her and not stop her ? nah, he just never tried xD

Sorry but I can't read something with no common sense and that never tried to think about the story. I just wonder how could I read 5 chapters of that thing. First manga ever to let me feel like that and I have read more than a few thousands.

Its kind of really tragic how he wants to save and its funny how he fails most of his tries...i screamed at one part "just freakin kiss her make her stay just 1 min longer and past the 17:30 so the "death" Truck drives off.."...

so far, it's good and interesting story from Fukuchi sensei.
as usual, just like his previous works, it has 'super power' on this character and story
and this make and ressemble just like "All You Need is Kill"
