It's the 2060s, and Japan has perfected the "MRI System," a piece of neurotechnology that, when given the brain of a person who died within the past 48 hours, can analyze the visual memories contained within; even being able to give scientists a look into what the deceased saw in their final moments. Needless to say, this is a highly regarded – and greatly feared – method that has been placed under stringent restrictions and is only authorized for use by a special police unit, Section Nine, for the investigation of baffling or high-profile crimes. Aoki Ikkou is a talented newbie who has just been assigned to Section Nine. He initially has qualms about delving into people's most private moments and analyzing their darkest fears and fantasies, but as he settles in with his teammates and warms up to his boss, the highly intelligent Maki Tsuyoshi, he becomes more and more competent at his job.Though quick to develop pride in his career, Aoki still struggles to balance his family relationships and love life with his demanding workload, further complicated when he's drawn into the dark past and murky circumstances surrounding the outwardly cool and self-controlled but internally tormented Maki. 6g1471
Notes:
- The first chapter is a prologue that features the first case where the MRI method was used. Chapter 2 is where the main cast is introduced.
- Won an Excellence Award for manga at the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2011.
12 Volumes (Complete)

Shimizu Reiko is among the most talented mangaka of her generation and Himitsu is unarguably her magnum opus. The convoluted plot, solid characters, wonderful characters build and flawless art are a testament to its standing.
This was a surprisingly good read with a spectacular ending.. However - The stories are pretty chilling with lots of graphic gore so if you have a faint heart, I don't recommend you reading it. There is a lot of blood and exposure of organs and other body parts so beware..
There are many cases with a bigger case in the background however when I read this series, I'm more focused on the characters and their relationship with each other. There's a lot that were unsaid or not overly revealed to leave room for interpretation. Some people claim BL undertones and some claim super strong platonic relationships and I'm totally fine with both because it doesn't matter - the characters do care a great deal for each other. I really enjoyed that the characters were really well written and have strong traits that define who they are. I also enjoy Shimizu Reiko's storytelling style - there are scenes of little dialogue so that we can try to feel what the character's thinking or the atmosphere. There are also juxtaposition of scenes that reminds me of cinema storytelling.
The plot does get pretty dark and in several ways disturbing, but it doesn't stop me from appreciating the human-ness in the characters in dealing with it. I do like that there was substantial research from the author - who knew politically it would become like this in 2060? Maki is such an irable character and it keeps me wanting to continue reading.
This has a much better plotline and tone than Kaguyahime and Moonchild (Shimizu Reiko's other works) and although sci-fi there are still lots of other things that makes sense. I highly recommend if you enjoy a crime investigation with bromance undertones with complex characters.
Can someone please finish translating this? If not, can a English translation manga publisher please pick this up, and finish translating the whole series? I'm willing to seriously buy the manga when it comes out in English.
It's just that good.
I came across this manga by accident and once I read the first chapter, I was seriously hooked. The stories are dark (some disturbing) yet it's so awesome that I can't stop reading. I love the main character, Maki, who's not only intelligent but so quick at grasping the situations and predicting the outcomes. Though there isn't much focus on "romance" in this manga, but we get a glimpse or a sneak peek of whom had feelings for whom. It's kinda complicated but I hope the ending is good.
Gotta read this if you're running out of titles!
This is shoujo just like MPD Psycho is (was) shounen. As in, it's much more grisly and creepy than you might expect. But, as long as you can stomach that, it's a fascinating read, and definitely one of my favorites. Forensic sci-fi, drama, criminal drama, ethics, and romance, this has rich content from all over the board. Great for more mature readers who would like a dark and compelling story.
I love it. So expertly written. I've never been a big mystery buff but I get so addicted to reading these cases. And can I just say WHAT great character-development!!! i love Tsuyoshi so much haha. His and Aoki's relationship is def. interesting. Believe me the whole "plot" gets so much more interesting as you go on. It builds on in layers, subtly. I love that kind of stuff! And the art? Very beautiful. The mangaka is one of my top faves. 😀
Oh, I forgot to add that one of the best things about this manga is how actually realistic it seems for a sci-fi themed story. There are so many bittersweet moments in here. The "evil" people like the murderers... u get to feeling so sorry for them and sympathizing them. It's great. I love how it makes everyone so human. I literally tear up sometimes. READ THIS!

I'm only on the 2nd chapter, but this is already more than I expected. It's dark, but good (plus, it helps that I like dark manga). The first chapter implies that
the president was in love/infatuated with his daughter's lover , but I found that to be a lovely component that made the first chapter great. It also has an incestuous flavor that I enjoyed (Yeah, I love the taboo). Worth the read -it's pretty different.
This really is a great series. It more of a dark manga; showing the a realistic portrayal of what it would be like if we could see into people's minds. The characters are deeper than they first seems to be and the plot always keeps you reading. I just wish someone would scanlate it again 🙁
Added this to my wish list because of the Zazen Boys song, "Himistu Girl's Top Secret". Who knows, there might be a connection, heh. I guess I'll have to wait until more chapters are scanlated. But, judging from the two previous comments, this series looks promising.
