I normally don't structure comments like this, but this is honestly such a wild ride I'm not sure I could be coherent otherwise.

Art: 8/10
The ... expressions are magical. Especially those with tears.
That is to say, they all look pretty silly.
However, I dig the old style, and the mangaka sure knows how to do a full page spread. He's got an eye for detail, too.
Plus, some of the character designs are fairly imaginative.

Characters: 5/10
Little to no character development.
Very few of the characters' reactions or actions are believable and they make leaps in logic I wouldn't previously have thought possible. It's unintentionally hilarious, occasionally infuriating, and to clarify, this happens every couple of chapters or so.
Bizarrely, toddlers past a year old or so can speak/understand language perfectly and grasp otherwise difficult concepts to swallow/ Honestly, they probably behave the most logically out of the entire cast.

Plot: 9/10
The series is structured into arcs, and there is no transition between them. Initially, this is fairly jarring, but you get used to it. There is an overarching plot although the mangaka takes a while to set up the story before reaching it. Without giving away too much, the plot is incredibly unique, refreshing, and fairly well-written.
Most of the arcs seem to be connected in ways that are planned, which I appreciate, but it's fairly obvious, at least to me, when they aren't (you'll find a few continuity errors).

Writing: 6/10
There've been a few continuity errors and plot holes from what I've read so far (ch. 183), mostly relating to characters switching pronouns. I'm not too sure if it's due to errors on the translator or mangaka's end, but I suspect the latter. It's a little distracting, but mostly minuscule.
I wouldn't really call this horror, as it's neither particularly frightening nor suspenseful. Every arc or so, the mangaka seems to the genre and draws some gore that, quite frankly, feels out of place.
I'm not sure I'd consider it sci-fi, either, as that normally has some grounding in reality, while this just page upon page of misinformation, and none of the futuristic technology is ever explained in detail. That is, it's fairly shoddy world-building for sci-fi. You do get a few hilarious anachronisms from the 90s (brick monitors, computer punch cards).

Misc: 10/10
All flaws considered, I'd still read this if I were given a chance to do this over. I had fun reading this, and I've got some priceless reaction images in my folders. 14-sai is honestly best read with friends, so everyone has the opportunity to go, "what the heck?" and "how did you come to that conclusion?" etc.
This manga is a wild ride all the way through, and yes, I'd recommend this to someone without hesitation. It's the weirdest thing I've ever read, and personally, I think that says a lot.
I started reading this because of the strange premise, because I like body horror, and because I like chickens. It really doesn't disappoint. Just let the events unfold as they may; laugh if you must.

I find very disturbing the draw of a guy with a giant chicken head; but i guess this is not horror; a dark humor comedy or a triller, may be. This manga can be recomended by the intense madness that shows. Simply i didn understand it.

the story is interesting, but it's such a mad drive... I mean I can't read it in one go, and no not because it's long, but because it will frustates the reader and drives him crazy. Mad theory and scenario after another, there is that much madness and non-logic a brain can stand.

Okay, first I guess I will start with how this was a manga released in the 80's so the art, exaggeration or "lack of logic" does not at all take away from it. Considering how far removed the mangaka was from back then he only had his imagination, his own time being 1980's and the manga 2200.

So, with that said, I enjoyed the art, and the storyline very much. The art style has an old school western feel to it its not polished futuristic vector art, it may have appeared crude, but it did not take away from the experience and instead enhanced it at certain points of the manga. 

 To enjoy this series you really need an open mind. It is very surreal, intense and explicit. It seriously is for a lack of a better word a "mind fuck" in every corner. You will be shaken by every idea introduced in it. In a sense it reminds me of a better version of "The happening," for in the end it is basically about the ultimate consequence of the sins of man against the world in which they live and nature taking action to sustain it self, although there is the issue of the dependency all these forms of living things have with one another.

This manga is filled with everything you can think of, which is impossible for me to even break down without spoiling anything. There is even the idea or theory of worlds within worlds that probably exist within the utopian, ideal world.

What a bizzare piece of story. The art isn't very well-drawn(terrible anatomy, poor perspectives, etc.) but it does set up a certain surreal and extremely psychdelic atmosphere. Many of the elements are really full of imagination and quite creative but at the same time, there's no logic to the entire story. Everything happens simply because the writer wishes it to and it's best(like barbapapa mentioned) to not think too deeply and just enjoy the ride of insanity.

A pity that a fair amount of scenes are somewhat repetitive + draggy and the pacing throughout the story is somewhat uneven. The last few volumes became a bit tedious to read 'cos of all that repetivity.

Still, it's really quite good. 🙂

And is it just me but does a bit of the horror border on eroguro nonsense(the non-violent type)? Btw, the last chapter gave me lots of nightmares.

I hate cockroaches and ugh, why did he have to cutesify them? And getting them eaten... what the hell.

Absurd by all standards

I started reading this out of the sheer absurdity of the premise. And if you stick with it, you'll be rewarded fully, in absurdity. At one point it even becomes so absurd, you get desensitised to the point of not even thinking twice, and just wanting to seeing how far Umezu will take things. Which really just keeps you reading, and laughing a lot. I really enjoyed this manga, but if you can't handle copious amounts of "WTF" moments steer clear. This would be ahead of its time even now.

Fourteen is a very surreal story, with a bizarre blend of science fiction and horror. Chicken George, a hyper intelligent genetically mutated chicken breast, morphed into a man with a chicken's head, decides to extract revenge on mankind for their abuse of nature and animals.

The storyline is weird to say the least, and not necessarily in a very sophisticated way. It travels along the border between being genuinely interesting and childish (a lot of this can be attributed to the somewhat crude artwork), but never settles firmly in either of them. If you are able to appreciate ideas at this level of insanity, then you will probably find it interesting.

One of few titles I'm actively following these days, looking forward to each new release.

It's not very logical but that's just for what has been scanlated so far. I'll wait it out for now to see how well the story progresses, but the beginning is pretty bad... the characters aren't very believable.

The basics of the story seems to be an exaggerated future where humanity has destroyed most animals, genetically modify a vast portion of what remains, and eat chicken meat that was grown from a slurry (this isn't spoilers really for it's all seen within first few chapters of the series). In other words, it's a story of humanities perversions according to Kazuo.
