I was hoping for more emotional progress, but even in those moments they both still seem too slow for my taste, especially after so long doing such intimate stuff together. That most long term couples don't even do.

Hmm...while I can't bring myself to read past 3 chapters of Nana To Kaoru, how many times I try...
I read it in One Go...so, well...it's supposed to be a Decent work of Amazume sensei...
So, read it...
Though, I don't read the main series, Nana To Kaoru, I get this feeling that, it's not totally spoiler proof...Take Precaution !!

Oh yes it does. Being set in the future, it puts an upper limit on how far those two are going to go in the main thread.

Some of the reviews criticized this side-story for pointlessness, absence of character development and too much focus on SarashinaXTachibana.
The first half is a setup for majestic second half.

And the culmination during the last night.

It has A LOT of character development that becomes less subtle in the second half. SarashinaXTachibana serve very important purpose. They are older, more mature and equally dysfunctional couple for Nana and Kaoru to look at and draw parallels. And with all the build up, it culminates exceeding my expectations.

It's just more of the same, except their on vacation with an older and experienced S&M couple. N&K themselves are exactly the same, their characters haven't grown of changed in the least little bit. For some reason N & K are able to play S&M type games with each other, but yet neither of them can it their feelings for the other even though they have been fooling around this way for quite a while now. Kaoru doesn't think he's good enough for Nana so he keeps his mouth shut and continues to act like a putz, and I'm not sure what Nana is afraid of. They would certainly enjoy their S&M's more though if they went all the way. To me, the story gets annoying after a while, just like the original.

Baby steps to Giant strides

I've read many people getting angry over this series because of several points:

-The focus is mainly Sarashina and Tachibana's relationship, it's place in society, how they both see it and the POV from Nana and Kaoru and how they see their own bond.

-This series it's not going to use the baby S&M you see in the original, the focus is heavy on the truth (that sometimes we might forget that despite being 'mostly' treated with so much heart and warm in the original) that in S&M someone gets hurt and someone is inflicting that pain.

-A bit more focused on the feelings than anything.

-If the author doesn't pull a 'Escaflowne' then we are seeing the foundation for the future relationship between Nana and Kaoru.

-Again, the focus is heavy on the emotions. Not just from Nana and Kaoru but also from Tachibana and Sarashina, thus several chapters focus more on the later.

Like with the Original Nana to Kaoru this is a beautiful series if just a tad more liberal when it comes to nudity and sex and a lot more angsty, a great follow up of the original but if you were expecting suddenly seeing Nana and Kaoru in a relationship . . . well don't hold your breath. They have many issues to solve before that.

It is like an older version of Nana and Kaoru meets their younger selves and how they all react to it. The pacing of the story is slower than the original series and it lacks much of the same tension. The relationship between Nana and Kaoru has not evolved much more than from the latest chapter of the original series but you do get a sense of the future of their relationship in the lives of the older couple. In a lot of ways, it is like a slice of life story for BDSM couples.

No character development

Where ever the development in the main story goes this side story has nothing to do whit it.
The male main character is even more ball-less than in the beginning of the main story. His inferiority complex is as big as in the beginning of the main story and he is less aware of the feelings of his partner than ever. The female main character was in the main story much, much more aware of what she wanted (not completely aware but still very good noticeable for the reader), here in the side story it is completely gone and she react like a inexperienced girlie except for the bondage scenes (and even then ...).

If you like to see some really nice drawn bondage scenes and read which SM-Philosophy the mangaka has, than this side story something for you. But there is nothing beside this, except for the short look in the past of some side character (Tashibana-san from the Sexshop). There is no big story (more something of a slice of life), no character development (so far, but hey, they are in this house only for 4 days, without a big-bang there can't be a big development in this short period of time) and only a bad connection to the main story (the setting is set in the future of the main story, either the mangaka connects the side story whit the main story somewhere or this only big BS). As someone mention earlier it would be better if the mangaka used some new character for this arc and not Nana and Kaoru.

Pointless pandering. The main story actually goes somewhere. This however glosses over all the would-be character development to give you pretty pictures, all under the guise of some sort of imioned fascination. This is basically tells us how far things get between the two/how they feel about each other before the main series actually gets to albeit inadvertently.

If he wanted to showcase this kind of content he should have done it with without Nana and Kaoru, or even made up a different story/characters entirely. Either that, or wait till the series actually gets to this point naturally. Because unlike those innocuous side stories, whatever happens here carries a lot of weight. The story itself is ok, but it's dumb move on Amazume imo.

The Arashi story-line is set about 8 months ahead of the main story line during the final summer of Nana's and Kaoru's final summer before beginning their senior year of high school. They are invited by Sarashina and Tachibana respectively for a short summer vacation to the summer residence of Sarashina sensie. From there the story delves into the deeper emotions and interplay between an established BDSM couple and the impact it has in the everyday life giving the young couple a look at what might possibly happen between the two of them.
