hmm, why did that pop up in your mind?? I think it's quite fitting to have gladiators fight (to death??) inside the arena on a lawless island where human trafficking, murder and all around craziness is a common thing this just seems fitting. Think Rome 😛

See Master Roshi's reference in the hat/beard. The ending fight scene was also a tribute to Dragon Ball. Oda is quite open about his love for Dragon Ball.
