I came across an indie manga called "Unrivaled" on IG, I gave it a shot and found it was a lot better than I expected it to be! I consider it an underground gem because I haven't seen many people talking about it, granted it is an American made manga so that might be it. Anywho the book is read from right to left; I was happy to see that carried over. The story is a reimagining of the Son Goku/ Son Wukong legend but with some new tricks. First off the series doesn't go the expected route of magic and fantastical elements I expect when I initially think of The Monkey King; instead the series has a more grounded hand to hand/sword fighting, that was refreshing after seeing many anime going down the DBZ massive power-scaling slope. There is a clear love of world-history in it's pages so fellow "Vinland Saga" fans might find this up their alley as well. The book starts off okay with Chapter 1 really just setting the pace of the village, but by time I finished Chapter 2, I was really looking forward to the next fight; and that thrill continued for the rest of the book. Vol.1 has 9 Chapters and was one hell of a ride [I'm trying to be spoiler free] here] but ends with a bang. Another cool thing I loved in Unrivaled is how Goku becomes Son Goku; it's made more of a “coming to maturity” tale. Any case, a fantastic read would definitely recommend it! Fans of "Vagabond" might enjoy this as well, it has a "follow the sword vibe".To the best of my knowledge Paperback is only available here:Check it out 84s9
