Yasuda Ippei, the billionaire playboy, becomes a man by wandering the world and getting laid a lot. At first the author leans a little too heavily on Ippei saving women from throwaway rapists, but he gets it out of his system and moves to less predictable plotting. Heartfelt moments of sympathy and humility save Ippei from being annoying. The plot gets you invested in the "one year to get a good wife" concept quickly, then throws some twists and turns in there to keep it from wrapping up too fast. Ippei comes across as a legitimately hot guy with the right ratio of kind-to-jerk, or tough-guy-to-clown, and the women all look great. The art style is classic and cool, although there were times when I was disappointed or confused by abrupt cuts or undistinguished character designs. I feel that the mangaka was not willing enough to go for big and bold compositions, and some s where important things happen are not alloted extra size or attention. So it often putters around when you want the visuals to hit a crescendo. The art gets somewhat more daring as it goes on and there are some creative images like opponents standing in the middle of (metaphorical) ferocious ocean waves, or a full-page sex shot censored by covering up the entire lower half of the page with an oblique pattern. The chauvinism is frontloaded, so if you can tolerate 70s-Japan-level sexism, you get rewarded by seeing Ippei grow out of it. I was touched by a few scenes where Ippei demonstrates high levels of kindness and maturity. If you like whirlwind romances, Ore no Sora will give you plenty - plus some unexpected aftercare.
