Award winning ? Really ? I mean it wasn't bad, I even LOL'd quite a few times, but in the end it wasn't anything that special.

The story had way less romance than I would have thought, this was more about family relationships (broken ones) than anything else, and the journey to mend them, even though I don't think Mao's parents deserved any of it.

As usual for japanese manga there were way to many love polygons. Like others have said Daiki's love for her felt unnecessary for the story, just like the return of her biological mother at the end.

I liked Mao and her personality but that was not what a 17 yo girl would act like, am I supposed to infer that her parental neglect left her emotionally retarded ? because she acted more like a 12-13 yo.

Some of the side characters also got some ... results/closure, but there could have been more and more depth overall. It also ended sooner than I would have liked, but what else is new ?

Why the hell is it revealed that daichi likes her, like wtf. That felt abrupt, like adding more drama for no apparent reason. He acts like a dick to her and then it is revealed he has feeling for her. That was really unnecessary. I would have been much happier if instead of feeling anything romantic, he would just think of her as a pillar for him like a family memebrr

I really like the interaction with

the step family, from the beginning she did not like them, but you can see as the manga goes through, her interactions increase and she much better

Waste of time

Just got bored after so many confessions and no real change. Most of the adults act immature as if there's no difference between the high schoolers and them.
The fact that they become a couple in the last chapter made me realize how much of a waste of my time this was.

Now it obviously doesn't deserve the 1.0 I gave it, it's more like a 4. But way too many people have rated it high.

I think this was the very first manga I ever read, so I might be just a bit biased. I've read lots more romance manga since then and have probably seen all the cliches by now - but I'm writing this from my memory of my first read. From this, I learned what it felt like to have your heart squeeze a little when a character blushed or kissed or had a cute moment. I felt for the MC as she held onto her at first unrequited love for her older childhood friend who only saw her as a little sister. I also just really enjoyed the sort of nostalgic sweetness for the day-to-day life living together and the dynamic the MC and ML had.

While there were definitely cliches like festivals and such, I think for the most part this was a very well-developed story in of pacing and the development of the characters' feelings, in relation to the well-thought-out backstory of their lives together that grounds the story with a more realistic touch. It might be a classic shoujo, but it didn't feel like the cut-and-paste mass-produced shoujo that's been repeated a million times. I think this was a very well-thought story which really captures the feelings of romance of youth and their everyday life.

Classic (boring) Shoujo

I made it to ch. 35, however I feel like I should have stopped much earlier. It's very rare for me not to finish a series that I start and like, however this manga just became very boring and stereotypical. Everyone in this manga is in love with each other in varying mash ups. It was a huge web of "I like him, but he likes her, she doesn't like him, but him instead, who doesn't like her" Bemused and irritated? So was I. Some characters would all but directly say "I like you" and they would continue to remain clueless. There is a limit to how many times you can use this kind of personality/plot device and it was far exceeded in this manga.

Also not a fan of a man seven years her senior kissing the main girl without warning before telling discussing mutual feels. Too much power imbalance for me there

Some positives: The art is very nice, the characters are all likable and the family problems were relatively balanced and fair.

This is for sure not the worst shoujo out there, but I had a hard time finding much originality in it. One of my favorites is Basara, which I would definitely recommend over this

Okay so this is my first review of a shoujo on here. Granted I have done reviews before but heyoo. Running with the theme of this not being my first time, my recent re-read of this manga was not a first time either, no I had been reading from when it's first volume had been released, waiting for each chapter with baited breath. My first read of Taiyou no Ie was a pleasant one. It had all the good fickleness a normal shoujo slice of life should have with a honey oozing centre. The character you get is a charming scowls tsundere, with enough cute factor to allow you to ignore that sometimes she can be a bit of a buzzkill with an interesting backstory. The main male lead also was an interesting choice, albeit not extremely striking. Though I guess for a story about a shoujo main rooming with an older male, it was nice to get a male that was not sarcastic or somewhat belittling was a nice change of pace. I liked the brother and some of the other characters to come along. The rivalry for once was a bit more realistic, it was nice to have a female rival that didn't become a complete b*tch after encountering our heroine however I found myself not really caring for more of the outside characters such as the friends. Sure hey had a cute plot but at he time, the scenes with their relationship felt more like a filler to space he chapters.

But overall without giving any spoilers my first read of Taiyou no Ie was a good one, great art, funny cute story and a romance youth predictable that was refreshing.

That was what I thought until my re-read. Which is where I want my review to focus more one.

Do not get me wrong, this is still a good manga, and it's one I will happily re-read, there are reasons I re-read it. But as I re-read it there were certain things that irked me that I never noticed before.

For one the romance is actually a lot quicker than I imagined. The first time I read it, I recalled he main male being a lot more reserved so that caught me off guard a little. Maybe it was because I was reading whilst the manga was still ongoing making updates seem longer and that I was too caught up in the males ability to sparkle whilst wearing a fedora of all things and the fact he looked good in a suit- Sorry I side tracked there- but in any case the romance is as equally quick as it it is slow. A quick romance is fine, but when a naturally quick progressive romance starts to prolong it gets annoying. I mean towards the end, there was a lot of unnceccersary actions taken to prolong the characters actually getting together. They could have easily used some of this time prolonging stuff to actually give us chapters where they were officially together, they could have explained he same plot points whilst yah ey were together.

Another thing I noticed was, though whilst refreshing, the shoujo fell into a rather generic fashion. There were interesting moments but also rather plain moments that felt too forced or just like it was trying to live up to a cliché. Thus the friends arc that nobody really asked for, even the first male rival seemed rather cliché and uneeded, I think the brother as a rival was plenty fine.

The whole idea of the female main being a mobile author fell to the background a lot. If it weren't for the female rival, the whole idea of a mobile novel would have been useless. Towards the end it felt like the mangaka suddenly ed that he web novel was a certain aspect of and tried to tie it in at the end, and I can appreciate that she would have had to keep that consistency to he start of he manga. But the web novel aspect is really just a background part to it. A thing to note is that this manga came out a little time after watashixxshinasai so maybe the mangaka had an idea inspired by that but in the end the manga turned into it's own thing?

I digress however, I think the only other thing to irk me about he manga is that it felt a little artificial. The romance and story wasn't the same as I first read it, which is a shame because maybe it's just because I just naturally notice more things upon a second re-read.

So with that in mind would I recommend Taiyou no Ie? Yes actually.

As I said my first read was a pleasant one, and no matter how many flaws I notice upon my many re-reads, that won't take away from the fact that I did enjoy the manga for what it was. Even when re-reading there were points where I felt the same way I felt when I did read it. So for first time readers I'd say yes, you'll enjoy it. You may notice things on your second re-read but it won't really ruin the experience for you so much that you'll want to put it down.

I enjoyed the manga and I will re-read it again. It's a cute short manga and that's all it aspires to be. For that I can appreciate it!

Cute to a fault, Sweet and lovely enough to keep the excitement. Something that I reread 3 times, which is pretty rare.
Incredibly real and no over exaggerated cliche shoujo moments, and something I recommend all manga readers to read, despite not liking the genre.

Couldn't Stop Reading

I could not put this one down. I started it and didn't want to put it down, but sleep called.. haha.

Storyline
The story between Hiro and Mao was a little irritating but at the same time understandable.

I mean think about it. You have a 24 year old working man and a 17 year old high school student who've been friends since childhood. Of course their relationship is gonna be a little awkward. Plus it takes the whole manga for them to get together and it leaves you hanging in the end. What the hell is up with that???

It deals with family, friends, school, work, and love all at the same time. What person at what point in their life didn't have to deal with at least three of these things at the same time? I think the reason I found this manga enjoyable was because I could relate to Mao. Also the ing characters weren't left out of the manga. They actually played a huge role in the development of the main characters which is a huge plus in my book.

The artwork was decent. Though there were some areas where it was like... "WTH 😕 " when it came to their mouths. The eyes seriously needed some work too.

Plot
I guess if someone's never experienced the feeling of true loneliness, they probably wouldn't quite understand where the main characters are coming from. It'd be the same if you've confessed and been rejected. You'd know how the characters felt. The plot is all on how a person takes it. Personally I put myself in Mao's shoe's because she reminds me of myself, only I was worse off at her age. If you take out the little clips of shorts that are inserted you wouldn't really understand much of the story on some parts of it. However!! (Yes there's a but.) You can still follow the story and see how their relationship develops over the course of their interactions while together.

I loved it has become my favorite manga, beautiful drawing, amazing story, cute characters.
I feel empathy with Mao at first but you don't know if she have double personality or what.. but, I still like her she's strong and she's not like other characters who lose their pride and cry bc a boy. Not her, she has problems.. parents issues. She doesn't know where she belongs, where is her home? She just need a place to be and to found herself. I'm gonna cry now You need to read it. I loved how did ended it but I'm sad for daiki (i love him) I prefer him to be with Mao, he's been in love with her all his life I'm quite sure that he's gonna be always in love with her. A happy ending with those would be great, but I can only imagine it in my head. HUH.
But I love all the story, was touching I cried thousands times, her father was really annoying. I don't know what else to write because it's an amazing and beautiful story.
PS. Daiki, I offer you all my love.

Personally, this is my favorite manga of all time. It's a believable family drama blended with romance. It''s not PERFECT -- there's a bit where it's not so great, and the ending takes a liiittle long -- but it's mostly a really strong story about redemption and healing and it never outright ignores the family aspect in favor of the romance. Wrote a long review on it. Seriously, this manga gets so much right. You may be able to relate to it.
