Description (I added one at the top after I originally wrote this.....) :
This manga is a fantasy with dark overtones. It involves spiritual pathways called Gates that ferry the souls of the departed to the other side. There are Black Gates, however, that take the souls from the living. The "Mitedamashi" are people who can summon or close gates. They save the living from the Black Gates. Senju is one of these people, and he is the guardian of Hijiri, a boy he once saved. Hijiri is a gatekeeper who is haunted by the past as his powers develop. The future of the world falls on his shoulders.
The first volume starts out a bit slow, and you find yourself wondering where it's going. Toward the end, it picks up and the momentum carries on through the rest of the series. You do get to know the characters, even though it's slow at first. The characters are a nice contrast to each other. Through flashbacks, you discover how they ended up where they are in the present time. Conflict occurs in the story due to differing opinions, especially with the addition of two guardians, and others who wish to close all the gates and erase death from the world. By the third volume you will be hooked until you finish it. The ending is one of those good emotional ones that leave you wishing there was more. I recommend this one. It's handy that TokyoPop has recently released a complete 3-in-1 volume of this one.
