Toshi x Sumi?

Yes, you've read that right. I wish this would have ended with Toshi finding new love with Sumi than staying with his unrequited love. If he ever did, I think he wouldn't have turned into a bastard who tortures the one he loves...since Sumi will be the one doing it lol Anywayy, in my opinion, it would be better, if Yumi gets another someone. I dunno but, the "love" of Toshi and Yumi for each other may look like more than friends, but still less than what lovers would. Oh well... I guess I'm the only one who ships Toshi and Sumi, loves Sumi the most, and likes Yumi the least. People here keep on saying how cute and nice Yumi is but I don't really see it. Sumi attracts me more <3 I'M ON YOUR SIDE, SUMI! 😉

Better than I expected, not as good as it could be

It was better than I expected going in to it--the art's pretty rough... but the story and art both, I noticed, had effort put in to them. In the end, I think the pacing could use adjustment. Kind of a diamond in the rough.

Oneshots in Vol1 were great!

This was a lovely series. Angsty and realistic. Some classic misunderstanding but it was handled very well. I was going to give this an 8.3 but the three oneshots in the first volume were so fantastic and well made that I had to boost the rating to 8.8
The brother's storyline didn't go to it's full potential so that was a drawback. I hope the mangaka makes a oneshot centered around him one day.

Pretty okay...

Although the storyline is very similar to the other normal romance yaoi manga, this one is a lil bit different I guess. I liked Kyuu a lot and he's so freaking adorable! I feel like smacking Toshi for saying that Kyuu is skinny and his body can't be compared to Kyuu's brother. Honestly saying, Toshi is a jerk. He's the only character I despises a lot in this manga. As for Sumi, I never actually disliked him but overall, the story is pretty okay. I still think it's a waste that Kyuu gotta do the confessing instead of that jerk Toshi. grrr

Different complex plot

In general I liked it...

I don't like Sumi-San and Toshi is an idiot, I feel sorry for Kyuu. Just because Toshi can't keep it in his pants, he starts treating Kyuu badly. If he's going to destroy the friendship he might as well confess, but he's such a coward it makes me angry. He makes Kyuu misunderstand and when Kyuu tells him he'll be a replacement he gets angry at him and says mean things.
Kyuu is so cute >_< I just want to hug him, he made me cry a few times.

In the end Kyuu had to confess to Toshi or else I believe nothing would have ever happened D: It had a happy ending but I feel the story dragged on a bit. Also after finding out what Sumi had gone through I can sympathize with him a bit and understand better his behavior, although that doesn't mean I approve of his promiscuity.

Like in most mangas there's a lot of details that are left unsolved, but in general I don't regret reading it.

frankly speaking, the first and second volume are irritating. the story is good, though. the art is also very cute! i really like the style! and yumi is so cute! i'm satisfied with the ending~
and i don't feel sorry at all for sumi. he's irritating, really, but it's not so bad. at least he's the one who make the story more complete.. anyway, this is a great read! i'm glad i didn't drop it when i find it a little irritating. i'm glad, really

Too good!!

I gave this one a , many many many times. I guess the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover" is absolutely true. When i did read it, for lack of any other manga, i found it to be awesome!!! The story's got a slice of life feel to it, with a rural background setting till vol 1 and it changes to urban setting in vol 2 through 3.
In this manga, Yumi is attracted to his childhood best friend Toshi, on learning that Toshi's in a relationship with his (outcast) older brother, Sumi.
The way the mangaka weaves the tale, its somewhat really fascinating. The manga's got plenty of angst and some really touching bitter-sweet moments. I loved it so much that i finished 2 vols in one day and now i'm just waiting for the 3rd vol to get completed.
I'll give the manga a 10. Do read it!!! I definitely recommend this XD

Good start, bad conclusion.

I have to say that I am quite disappointed with this manga. The first two volumes were great, with amazing buildup in of plot and character development, but that was all ruined by the horrible cop-out of the third volume.

The mangaka has introduced so many elements within the storyline and a deep, prolonged misunderstanding between the main characters, but suddenly, all of that vanishes in the third volume and we only get a run of the mill typical "yaoi manga" ending as if nothing in the first two volumes actually happened. A lot of loose ends do not get tied up at all, and the art goes downhill too (what happened to Toshi's eyes? O.o ) , which just makes me suspect the mangaka got fed up with the story and tried to end it quickly.

More specific criticism (contains massive spoilers for volume 2 and 3 and the ending):

So as a result of Toshi pushing away Yumi in volume 2 to protect himself, we see Yumi go into a really depressing state. He becomes malnourished and wastes away due to Toshi's insensitivity. It is an extremely dark and emotional volume.

Then comes volume 3. Yumi confesses. Toshi confesses. They sort out the misunderstanding in the span of a few pages with some tears. Then they have many pages of sex.

There is no real conclusion with Sumi, except that someone from Sumi's past conveniently showed up and Sumi got shoved aside. There is no referring back to the awful depression Yumi suffered from Toshi's ignorance. There is no dialogue clearing up the relationship between Toshi and Sumi (at least not between the short time from confession to sex). Yumi's recurring thoughts of burying people he hated went nowhere because he never did bury anyone nor do anything remotely violent. I mean, the readers can probably fill in the holes in the "off screen" portions of the manga, but because the selling point of volume 1 and 2 is a slow, detailed, and complex story, the shallow happy ending in volume 3 is extremely disappointing.

I'd give a 9 for volume 1+2, but a 5 for volume 3. That evens out to 7-ish. 🙂

slow yes, but with reward

I reviewed this yesterday after reading volume 3, but am changing it since I reread the scanlated volume 1 and the raw volume 2, volumes I read 15 months ago. I originally typed that this series would be very dissatisfying if you're unable to read the raws. Boy, was I wrong. Yes, you'll be dying to know the backgroundstory and the end, but the buildup is beautifully done, and I feel the low ratings are totally unbased. Even without knowing the end, every chapter is touching and entertaining. Another reason is the oneshots; they were meaningful and far better than the usual oneshots I've read of BL. I really love the psychological development of the characters and how the mangaka displays it. Her art feels raw and certainly in the beginning, with sharp shots that goes straight through you. There are a lot of recurring symbols, the arrow, the crow, the stars,... there's so much to find in this manga.

First, I start with the story. The plot is very ordinary, but each character has it's own complicated personality, which is written masterly by the mangaka. This may seem like the story is going nowhere, but that's not true. Every scene contributes either symbolically, or essentially in what happens later, or making characters realise something. Nothing comes suddenly, unlike the usual manga. There are no exciting actions or turns, but if only you notice the little details, you'd be struck with the sensitivity.
Fortunately, there is an ending, and boy, it's a satisfying one. It doesn't feel rushed up, and when Toshi cried near the end, I found it so endearing.

The characters are by no means perfect, afterall, there are several dimensions in them. The reason why Kyuu was loathing his brother, why Toshi loves Kyuu and then turned "mean" towards Kyuu, and how Sumi became the way he is, is fully covered up through flashbacks and conversations. I really liked Toshi, because he's goofy, quite shy, honest and kind, my fav type of seme 😀

Now, this isn't a complete dark manga, there are a lot of cute moments. Like how Kyuu was pouting when Toshi was eager to have Kyuu cutting his hair, since Kyuu thought Toshi would prefer him with long hair. Then Kyuu became happy again once Toshi said he prefers a Kyuu with short hair. Ofcourse Kyuu didn't get the inner meaning of the comment "Then I can see the nape of your neck" XD There are many more, and I'd love to see more of this scanlated, because there's so much more than volume 1, which is how the ratings of this serie became so low >(

I rarely give something a 10 or a 1. At first I gave it a 9, but after rereading, I believe this definitely deserves a 10. It's cleverly drawn, no scene is too much, and more entertaining than any other action driven BL.
