Rating: 9 (Great) (Updated Rating!)
Time of Review: Chapter 32 (Manta)
Favorite Aspect: Dramatic, Intense, and full of anticipation for Season 2.
The Golden Forest is a bit of a melodramatic treat. From the get go I was very drawn to Reniae's self sufficiency and rock hard emotional shell. I'm also a sucker for the gruff boy type that Kun appears to be at first. Their short but powerful meeting had me wrapped around the stories little finger. However, the beginning is just a "taste" of what the story is as it chooses to flash back around chapter 15.
Then the story goes back to "when it all began" and things got... weird. It includes some tough, almost overly edgy and dramatic themes which many might not enjoy. Themes of
abuse, slavery, ritual sacrifice, and rape.
Quite a few terrible things befell the protagonist in her past. The story is well-written and interesting, if a bit dramatic. My final rating will weight heavily on how the webcomic concludes, as we have only just finished season 1! Will Reniae finally get her happy ending? Boy do I hope so. 🙁
Chapter 57 Update:
The Golden Forest continues to blow my expectations out of the water, and just gets better by the chapter. It's tugging at my heartstrings with every new tragedy and triumph, and I never want to miss an update. My rating was a 7 before, and is a 9 now! I just can't get enough of it.
