My position in this fiercely polarized response to what is clearly and successfully a thought-provoking work
by jaeminuf

Rating: 9.0  / 10.0

Readers seem very divided about this work's treatment of rape, gang rape, rape victims, etc. Some think this work used rape as a mere plot device or, at worst, glorified rape. Other readers questioned why the video was not used to bring the perpetrators to justice.

I recommend ursulax's earlier review titled "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Ursulax nailed the heart of the story, one I found really touching.

I just want to respond to some comments made by various reviewers.

  1. The parents - Some readers wondered what the heck is the deal with the parents. How could they not know? Where are they? Etc. I think it was fairly clear that the author intended to portray the parents as well-intentioned but not very good parents whose failure to be good parents created and maintained the dynamic between the twins.

  2. The portrayal of the original Siwon - I think the author was really clear, yet again, that not only the gang rape but the aftermath really broke him, especially the discovery that his beloved younger twin was behind it all. The author did not portray Siwon as inherently weak. I think his heart broke, more than anything.

  3. The gang rape video, pt. 1 - Why did Siwon not use it to get justice? The answer is rather simple. Fear of victim-blaming and vilification. It's the reason that, in real life, rape victims often do not even bother to report rapes and, if they do, the cases don't make it to prosecution. They feel even more traumatized by the process because people so often hold the victims responsible for "causing" the rape. And, in Siwon's case, it was a gang rape by other boys. So, there's the rape, rape of an underaged youth, a gang rape, a gang rape of a boy by boys, a school/internet community full of people who saw an edited video that made it seem as if he was a willing participant who regularly slept with other boys, and clearly people who enjoyed it all vicariously instead of protecting him. Then, the nail in the coffin is the discovery that the younger twin he so loved had orchestrated the whole thing. Seeking prosecution would mean putting his twin behind bars. Yeah, gosh, why didn't Siwon report the rape?

  4. The gang rape video, pt. 2 - Why did Taemin and Siwoon/Woojin not use it to get justice? Given their life experience, I would have been shocked if they had chosen to pursue the legal route. The boys were neglected, violently abused, exploited, and in so many other ways failed by people who were supposed to protect them. We saw how ineffectual the teachers were. Why should they believe that authority figures would and could do the right thing for Siwon? No, they've learned that only they can protect themselves. And so they do deal out justice, their way, for Siwon.

  5. Siwoon/Woojin - Yes, there is something wrong with him. He itted it as much to Taemin when he said he deliberately put on a pitiful act as a child not to lose Taemin's attention. The Woojin Taemin ed is the one Woojin intended for Taemin to know. So he was calculating even when he was a little kid. And, after being unable to protect Taemin from his mom, Woojin decided that he needed to be more ruthless if he wanted to protect literally the only person who cared about him and he cared about. I think it's a miracle that Woojin wasn't more messed up than he was after the years of neglect by his father, physical abuse by his mother, and still more emotional, physical, and mental abuse by his "mother" and father. He kept his eye on the goal the whole time. Just didn't realize life wasn't going to wait for him to become powerful enough to protect Taemin. Fortunately, a miracle occurred.

  6. The miracle of the body swap - I really don't need an explanation. Life doesn't give you answers more often than it does.

Shallow

This had more potential than was realized. Characters and situations ended up being pretty shallow. Art style also took some time to get adjusted to.

Spoilers and heavy topics discussed below.

CWs for this webtoon: Bullying, rape, suicide, abusive alcoholic parents, child abandonment, child abuse, blackmail, twisted characters

Yoon Taemin: Abandoned by parents after being abused, had to get a loan to live, works multiple jobs to pay it off and plans on being a boxer later, gets hit by a truck while distracted and gets put in Han Siwon's body

Han Siwon: Bullied at school and by his brother, commits suicide, same school as Woojin

Min Woojin: Childhood friends with Taemin but goes with bio father to 'protect' Taemin

For their first webtoon, this was so good. So addictive too, I couldn't put it down until I was finished. There are a lot of twisted characters and situations in this and it had me hooked.

The main two perpetrators relationship was really interesting, it's too bad they had to be irredeemable bastards. Their last moment together left me curious what went down, but also, like...Joohoon raped Siwon (though it was supposed to be Jiwoon) because Jiwoon destroyed a picture of his sister who committed suicide after he didn't help, but he went and raped someone, causing them to commit suicide. I wish we'd gotten to see these two properly punished. :/

The side-pairing was kind of just there, though they were interesting characters. I still have no idea if they were going out or not, too bad.

I really liked Yoon Taemin in his real body so I'm really sad about that but that just adds to everything for me. We get a really nice moment in the last extra where they talk about it after visiting Yoon Taemin's urn. 😢

There was no sex which normally wouldn't matter but they had so. many. moments. where they were cockblocked so there was a lot of UST in the end.

Well-executed realism; undeveloped characters, lacklustre ending.

Undeveloped characters. Taemin is my favourite. Incomplete and lacklustre ending. Dull antagonists. Predictable plot. Glossed-over plot-holes. Well-executed dark realism. Evokes a desire for more. Recommended for those wanting a second-chance that doesn't come with consequences.

This was a major waste of time

I hate that everyone involved with the bullying didn't suffer any real consequences of their actions, and the seme even allied himself with the worst one of them in the end... wtf and the supposed villain is just pathetic

The romance is senseless, they are just together because they were friends who bonded over trauma one time when they were kids??

Unnecessarily complex narrative drags down a story about a great couple with incredible chemistry!
by StellaStar1

(Some minor spoilers). Whoa, this one, IMHO, wend the wrong way too quickly. But the beginning, so so so delicious! The whole Woojin knows who is in Siwon's body, and tries to persuade him to it to it - and the cat and mouse games between them, the push and pull, the incredible chemistry, the sheer sensuality of both of the uke and the seme... Whau, I was hooked. But then everything just went of the rails. Their relationship took a back seat to a predictable, boring web of cliche yaoi things. Jealous brothers, bullys, out of wedlock children, secret identities... WHY? WHY? They had an incredible thing going, and IMHO if the just kept it up, with the complex tit-for-tart between the uke and seme, this would have been an absolute winner. But it turns into a so-so, not very thrilling mystery. By the end, I was so underwhelmed that I hardly wanted to read the extras, altough the uke and the seme as characters do appeal to me and I have some modicum of interest in them.
The art I liked, it reminded me a bit of The beast must die, one of my favorites. And I also liked the Mad Dog from the same author, and I see some of the same problems there too. But boy, does he know how to build tensions between the uke and the seme, he rocks there! Just for this aspect of the story, it's worth reading, maybe even twice (some parts).

Nice but a lot of plot holes
by koja.kojyte

Rating: 7.0  / 10.0

Totally hooked, but a lot of plot holes and lack of realism. First thing, this manga tried to go in the direction of realism (it's not fantasy or parody/comedy). What I didn't like - I didn't like the twins' parents the most in the manga. They didn't care why there child tried to kill himself, didn't care why he weren't at home, and anyway it seems like they didn't exist, this aspect annoyed me because it wouldn't be like that in reality. Then it's a rather disappointing ending, because the guy actually killed himself because his brother is jealous. It wouldn't be like that in reality. Plus, the guy who ordered the rape and watched the rape became antihero and continued to manipulate his twin brother. And why didn't anyone the police when they had a rape video? And the last thing I don't believe is the abilities of the main character - in the first chapters, he is super strong and cunning, beating bullies 1 against 5, in the last ones, he can't even get out of the grip of the purple dude and his love somehow manipulates him. I think the author didn't come up with many things in advance and created the plot while writing and it turned out to be so inconsistent. Plus, the author himself said that this is his first work. And what I liked was the main character and his attitude to life, very sexy love interest and how they both interact, the guy with the mint hair was also fun. I would say that the strength of this manga is the characters and dialogues, and the plot is rather hollow... Oh, and he didn't explain why he moved to another body 😀! Although a few s could have added (eg. someone might have heard me pray and made a miracle!) or something similar.

Interesting drama and gorgeous art!

Rating: 8.0  / 10.0

The plot is engaging and not formulaic like so many other BL stories. Although the main romantic relationship is key to the plot, it doesn't read like a romance. I don't think it will be satisfying for readers who are expecting a romantic drama. As a psychological drama, though, I really enjoyed it. And I do like the romantic elements!

Rape, bullying, and abuse are used as plot devices, but unlike many other stories I've read, this one doesn't make light of serious issues or pair up characters who have seriously harmed each other. At the same time, it's not about those topics, so their impact isn't deeply explored. I can understand why some readers would be put off by that, but I prefer this over stories where trauma is neatly tied up and solved at the end or where it becomes a character's entire personality.

This webtoon isn't perfect, but it's higher quality than the majority of the webtoons I've read. Definitely worth reading.
