The ending was obviously rushed since the biggest plot-point (actually two of them) are never revealed. But if you look at it from a psychological standpoint then it's more about being dependent and then later on letting go if that makes sense.
Watashi no Shounen is kinda similar in that regard though that one is way more serious.
