We did a poll by me in 2017 that was also about D&D alignments but about the personality of our s:

True Neutral. The usually canon and hardest path in Megami Tensei games. Is mainline canon Batman Neutral Good or Chaotic Good? Putting Guts on this chart is also hard. He isn´t lawful or evil but the other 4 spots are all arguable.
I also read EU/US comics and am a librarian.

Neutral
But in reality I think it depends on the genre and age bracket that the story is targeting. Hate lawful good & chaotic good characters in normal life setting stories. But a shounen or supernatural story, I would be fine with those alignment. Chaotic Evil protag is hard to like in any setting though, but its fun to play.

Probably neutral good. A writer has to be really talented to get me invested in the story of a protagonist who’s a shitty person. Hermann Karlovich and Humbert Humbert come to mind as some great evil protagonists, I can’t think of any manga examples though.

Like in DnD, my ideal entirely depends on the protag's interaction with the other characters. If there is a clear goal that everyone else is seriously trying to work towards, and the MC goes out of their way to fuck it up for shits and giggles, it's incredibly annoying. No, you are not being heavy air quotes "in character," you're just being a pain. Not everyone can pull off a Captain Tylor.
That being said, when done well, I do like Chaotic Good or any of the other chaotic alignment. It's just not done well a lot of the time. It's often also kind of extremely boring when every protag is the same flavor of chaotic good. Lawful Chaotic-Good, if you will.

Chaotic Neutral to me, but it should lean towards Chaotic Good sometimes.
But I think this isn't the deciding factor in this matter. Because It mostly depends on the writer's skills to give us the controversies we all crave. I read and play stuff for characters mostly; so even though It is plotholes and cliches wherever you look, there is still a good chance for me to consider it good as long as I feel bonded to a character. Though it also could fireback if writer begins to tell a story using characters and not tell us about characters using story. (I hope my english is good enough to convey) It kinda ruins everything for me. For example SnK post 90th.
But that is unrelated to the question at hand. I dont really know too much about alignments. So I will list some of my fav protags: Guts, Griffith, Lelouch, Toua Tokuchi, Shimazu Toyohisa. I know this isn't much but I find non protags more interesting to be honest.
I find those fitting CN sometimes CG(except Tokuchi) feel free to correct me though. I didn't get to play dnd but I am planning to play it at some point.

It's no surprise to me that my choice, Chaotic Good, is currently the top choice in votes, since that's rather obviously what Luffy is.
Some people misunderstand "chaotic", but luckily Luffy is easy to understand because he is both the understood and misunderstood definition of chaotic alignment. The "correct" standard meaning that, because he is a pirate who rejects the notion of the authority of the globally-accepted world government, he is inherently anti-lawful. And the incorrect interpretation meaning... well, he goes around accidentally fucking things up sometimes. lol.
(and while there is certainly an argument that Gokuu is neutral instead of "good", there's no real argument of that for Luffy. Although he strongly rejects the moniker of "hero", he has a clear moral com that he follows over any possible desire for "strong fights" or even his own personal "freedom" )
Side note: maybe I'm just too old, but I'm surprised no fights have broken out over whether Yagami Light qualifies as Lawful or not. That used to be a hot topic.
