This week's poll was suggested by our member Miss Gradenko. Do you have a preference in of reading a series that's already completed vs. ongoing? 5u4b60

You can submit poll ideas here: https://mangaupdates.sitesdebloques.biz/topic/kilkdnn/site-manga-poll-suggestions

Previous Poll Results:

Question: How should SFX be handled?

Choices:

  • The original should be replaced with a translation SFX - votes: 626 (36.8%)
  • A translation should be placed next to the original - votes: 445 (26.2%)
  • A translation should be in the margins - votes: 470 (27.7%)
  • SFX shouldn't be translated at all - votes: 158 (9.3%)

There were 1699 total votes. The poll ended: May 10, 2025

I believe the last time we did this poll, more people preferred leaving the original SFX present and putting a translation somewhere else

I have a really difficult time with attention and focus, so it's easier for me to keep up with ongoing series than it is to binge completed ones, but a series being completed isn't a dealbreaker for me or anything.

I also like with ongoing series how if the site I'm reading on has comments, I can often participate in the discussion in a way I can't with a series that's been out for a long time, although again depending on the site it's on I may have to be there extremely early to get a chance to say anything anyone will notice, or in the case of a site like webtoons it doesn't matter how early I am, all the first level comments that anyone will ever see were already made 2 months ago by fast ers.

I dunno... I do follow several ongoings, but also from time to time we would binge a completed one... So no preference really

I read whatever catches my eye, whether it's complete or ongoing. Just because a series is complete doesn't mean I'll actually read the whole thing in the end

but I think I tend to get frustrated if the series is addictive/suspenseful and chapters are really slow. In that case, I prefer if the series were completed lol

I'll read something regardless of whether it's completed or ongoing. The only one I'm not a fan of is demo manga, where it's technically completed but, really, will never be completed in the format I originally wanted to read it in.

It's very rare that a manga causes me to read the novel, but a demo manga might prevent even that rare time.

If I’m reading a mangaka’s work for the first time, I prefer a completed series so I can get a full sense of their worldview and see if it resonates with me. If I end up liking their work, I don’t mind following their other ongoing series, no matter how long it takes between chapters.

I don't mind reading a completed or ongoing series, but I do have a few other criteria, especially for onoging ones:

  1. It's not a newly released ones (You know, the ones that has only released 1-5 chapters). I need at least 10 or 15 chapters to read this series.

  2. In case of the fantranslation ones, I need to know: a) when was the last time this group released the chapter of this series, and b) the release frequency.

I'll skip any ongoing series which last was years ago. I'll also skip any ongoing series with uncertain frequency release: every few months/years, for example. Unless this series is originally a monthly series, I'll just skip it.

It's a different case with official platforms which usually has steady release.

Also if manga is complete i need complete fantranslation. I prefer completed manga slightly more

I keep accumulating manga of all kinds but I end up reading only the completed ones.

Definitely prefer ongoing (as in the group translating the series is currently translating it. Don't really care if the series is actually complete or not.)

I prefer currently being translated series, as its easier to just put the act of reading the series as an habitual part of my life. I do binge read or sometimes try to habitually read a few completed series at the same time. Its like 2 or 3 of those being actively read by me.

This poll has the most bizarre results to me. What are you all doing on "MangaUpdates" if you prefer completed series? Go to a site that will have the complete scanlation done, jeez lol

Anyway, I picked I prefer reading ongoing series but dabble in completed series

I am on this site to see what manga are being currently scanlated and see if I have an interest in them. Obviously I want them to finish eventually, but I would say probably under 5% of the manga I've read were finished when I started reading them.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me "mangaupdates" is a misnomer as I rarely come here for the updates. I mostly use this site to track my reading progress and to provide direct links to official translations of series I'm currently reading.

I guess I used to use MU more for updates, but I just go to individual scanlators' sites less often these days, and MU doesn't really do a good job of actually keeping up to date with the updates of things I read, especially since a decent number of people/groups only post their translations on batoto, and those aren't updated here, and most official updates aside from webtoon don't get updated here either.

Meanwhile trash MTL groups often do, and even if I tick the box for "Hide this group's releases on the Releases page", that does nothing because they still show up under "Latest Release(s)", and the manhwa/manga/manhua itself shows up higher on lists that are sorted by latest release.

MU is fantastic for a lot of things, but at least for me and what I read, reliably keeping track of actual updates isn't one of them.

I don't have a preference. I don't mind accumulating and dropping a lot of ongoing series nor arriving too late at the conversation and missing the speculations. I can binge or slowly read a long series and I have made peace with unreliable updates. I'm more likely to finish completed series, but I read anything as long as it catches my eyes, even if it only has one chapter yet (but I do wait a bit more sometimes).

Yeah I mean, completed series are usually ideal because nothings worse than a series getting dropped in the middle and nobody ever comes back to finish it.

But if there's a group doing a relatively consistent schedule thats good too, gives you something to look forward to.
