If you could find out one thing about your future, what would it be? 1e1v31

I would like to know whether or not we will find life on other planets (in my lifetime, if I must specify that), and if so, if it is hostile. I think the idea of alien life is fascinating. And please understand, I'm not an alien conspiracy theorist. I'm just not so arrogant to believe that our world is the only one with cognizant life. 356tn
If you've ever thought or said "Nice Guys finish last" and really meant it, then you should probably read this LJ post by DivaLion. It's incredibly insightful whether you're male or female.

I would like to know the exact date, time, and way I die so I can try and go up against fate and change it. I think it would be interesting to see how I manage to end up getting myself into the very situation I tried so hard to prevent...

All I'd wanna see is if I have kids or not. I don't wanna find out if I have someone I love, because I'd prefer to not know how I found her or how we slowly fell in love. I just want to know if I do find a commitment in the future.

Hmmm
It has to be limited to my life time?
I would like to know how to build a machine that can convert information stored in the brain (your personality, memories, everything that makes you) in data and the other way around 🙂
That would be sweet

I'm less concerned about the future of my life than the impact I make on others. I'd like to know if I'll end up being a burden, that way I can plan my finances better.
The next lottery numbers.
It's not possible unless we believe
in predestination and I don't really
believe in that.
Thus, a way to corrupt the lottery
so I'd win.
Since I don't believe in predestination, I
don't think there's a way to tell everything
about my future if factors are random.
They wouldn't be if they could be foretold.

What he said.
It is meaningless to be able to glimpse into the future in either case, however.
If every event is predestined, you wouldn't be able to change it so as to avoid the ultimate result. It would still happen eventually like in Final Destination. You might be able to change minor factors but ALL options would lead to the same event ultimately.
If events were not predestined, which seems much more likely since people have choices, then it doesn't matter if you could glimpse the future because that would be only one possibility of events you saw.
Disregarding predestination, even if you could see next week's lottery numbers, assuming they are randomly selected as we are told, chances are that when you try those numbers next week you still won't win anything since the numbers will be randomly selected all over again.
Get it? There's just no easy "win/cheat" button in life.

Yet, this question asks "what if there were". So your point is invalid. Just because you prove the question irrelevant to your current reality doesn't mean that you shouldn't answer it. This question is meant to be answered from the perspective of a reality where you can know the future.

What question are you talking about. The thread question is "If you could find out one thing about your future, what would it be?", its not a "what if there were" question.

What is invalid? All I said was that if events are predetermined then you can't change anything and if they aren't predetermined then the future that you "glimpse" is only one possibility from many. Is my reasoning wrong?

I did answer. I quoted Mams and wrote "What he said." implying that I would like to know the future lottery numbers, were it possible...

This question is meant to be answered from the perspective of a reality where you can know the future.
That perspective would be through predetermined events, by which there is no chance factor. And I tried to explain that if events are predetermined, even if you know what is coming you can't change anything. It would be an oxymoron if you could change predetermined events.
Then I mentioned the Final Destination movies, and mentioned how people tried changing their futures, but ultimately failed.
So if everything was predetermined and I found out next weeks lottery numbers by seeing the future in which I did not win the lottery, even if I went and got a ticket with those numbers something would happen to the ticket and I would not win because I wasn't meant to.

I clearly mean here that the question assumes that there is a "win/cheat" button in life. Because the question assumes that you in fact CAN ask one question about your future. Unlike real life. I'm just saying that life truths has no place in hypothetical questions.

It's not wrong, it just doesn't matter. Again, for the purposes of the question we must assume that telling the future IS possible. So you're saying that that would make the future predetermined. That doesn't mean that there is no reason to attain knowledge about it. No doubt a clever man can benefit more from it.

I said that first... I can link to it if you'd like. Anyways, I'm just saying that you shouldn't be trying to disprove a hypothetical, as a means of giving a less interesting and "copied" answer.

Your viewing predestination as something that only affects the final result. It's simply a system to avoid paradoxes in time. Your actions still have consequences, you can still make choices, and causality is still in effect, so rather than simply asking about something you'd want to be different, it would be a better move to ask a question that would allow you to benefit. Perhaps you should rethink your answer to the question in such a way that the answer would be helpful even if it was set in stone.

Now?
To see how my life would turn out in about 10-15 years.
Just to know if it's all worth it.
Hrodulf and Bjornolfr, you will not be forgotten.

I don't know. I can think of what I don't want to know. I wouldn't want to know when I died because it would take all the mystery from life. Nor would I want to know if I'm going to be happy or achieve my dreams because I believe that happiness is found in the journey and dreams are grasped with your own hands so whatever the answer is I would not change the way I live. I wouldn't want to know if I find love either because that's a path I want to travel without a road map. So I'm going to go for the easy one, the lottery numbers for next week. Having money would open up so many doors to me, I could pay off my student loan, do postgrad study without having to worry about finace. I could sort my sister and her son out with a house and pay my nephew's school fees. It would be great to have financial security.
The pen is mightier than the sword...and considerably easier to write with.
