The Last Airbender was co-created and produced by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California. Its animation was mostly done by South Korean studios JM Animation, DR Movie, and MOI Animation.

I put anime since it was mainly animated in Asia rather than USA.
Edit .: and the setting / inspiration is closer to manga/anime, than USA comics/cartoons.

I mean, I used to think it had sense differentiating manga as stuff the came only from Japan and certain magazines. But then, there are tones of artists that do the same style and that those same magazines payed they to publish stuff under them, so I think it would be spitting on the faces of those manga/anime artists.

I mean it's totally unfair saying an artist that has been inspired since young by manga or anime, like for example Dreamland is less of a manga artist because of where he published. Just as all those underplayed guys that sometimes don't even make it to the credits ...

2 white Americans created the show for a US Network with a Korean studio. The head writer is also a white American. Only 7 eps of Kora S2 were animated in Japan and Pierrot did a mediocre job because they mostly suck. The show´s main influences are Chinese, outside of that chibi ep that indeed homages anime, and no one in Japan knows what Avatar is. PlatinumGames had to be told what Avatar is when they were hired and that game´s shoddy cutscenes were animated in New York.

A case can be made that Bay made an anime adaptation with Transformers. Shyamalan and now Netflix 100% didn´t. It's an American-Korean Cartoon.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an anime inspired American cartoon. People better get that through their thick skulls.

More complicated question: is Robotech anime or cartoon?

Anyone who pushes the "Avatar is anime" argument just refuses to accept that Western Animation can be good.

I think with Avatar, many fans are really proud to call it a cartoon.
At the same time, the aesthetic clearly fits in with anime more than it does modern cartoons. As a genre, classifying it as anime is not some kind of horrific injustice, it's a useful differentiator from the rest of the modern cartoon genre.

However, I don't think people are going to be arguing too hard that it is not a cartoon. We don't have to have this conversation with the old Disney movies and 'Disney-like' anime, even though that era of American animation was essentially the origin of the cuteness aesthetic.

I put anime since it was mainly animated in Asia rather than USA.

With that logic, G.I. Joe, '80s-'90s Spiderman, OG My Little Pony, Transformers would also be an anime.

(Then again, Transformers really did end up becoming an all-Japanese production so that has a case for being called anime)

Can't believe there're still people who called it an anime 😂

Anime is Japan's animation. Even though Avatar has the similar "anime-style" animation, it's still produced by Nickelodeon. It's a cartoon, the best I've seen so far. I think I've watched Avatar 2 or 3 times, and would still love to rewatch it again someday.

It's a cartoon. There is zero logic behind calling it an anime, because neither its art nor its storytelling style or characters is even remotely anime-esque. If anything, it reminds me of a manhwa/manhua. And wasn't it produced by an American company for an American network?

Anime (アニメ) is just the short version of animation (アニメーション), the term Japanese people use for cartoons. If you open the Japanese Wikipedia page of any American cartoon, the description would say アメリカのアニメーション(America no animation) or アメリカのアニメ (America no anime). Anime and cartoon are the same thing.

On that note, manga, manhwa, and manhua are also the same. For example, Japanese people would just call the other two 韓国の漫画 (Kankoku no manga = Korean comics) and 中国の漫画 (Chuugoku no manga = Chinese comics).

But, I guess we’re talking about the English dictionary version of the .
By the way, had manhwa and manhua been added to the official English dictionary too?

Whether Avatar is anime is an old convo and nothing new can really be said about it. If anyone actually cares about the distinction between anime and cartoons, you're better off examining your opinions on other series. I want to see "Avatar definitely is/is not anime" people try to define what they think of Bakugan or Cybersix
